A police officer who was stationed at Van Stadensrus Vispol in the Free State was sentenced to 12 months, wholly suspended after he pleaded guilty to a charge of discharge of a firearm by Dewetsdorp Magistrate’s Court. Sergeant Tebello Kekana was sentenced for an incident that happened on10 December 2024.

On the day of the incident, Kekana’s wife arrived at White House tavern with her friend and found her husband in the tavern. Sergeant Kekana called her aside and an argument ensued between the two. Kekana assaulted his wife with open hands and hit her with a firearm.

The wife stopped a police vehicle that was passing by, and Kekana fired a shot at his wife and the bullet scratched her right ear. The police managed to disarm him and he was arrested.

He pleaded guilty to a charge of discharge of a firearm, and he was handed a sentence of 12 months. The sentence was wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that he is not found guilty if a similar offence during the period of suspension
