A Gauteng police officer was sentenced to five years imprisonment for assaulting a civilian on 19 July 2019 by the Vosloorus Magistrates Court.
On the day of the incident, at around 04h30, eight police officers entered the house of Ms Mavimbela in Ndlangisa Street, Extension 8, Vosloorus asking her of the whereabouts of his brother. The police officer assaulted her, accusing her of hiding his brother.
They handcuffed her and took her to various places trying to find her brother. During this period, she was threatened, as the police could not find her brother. They later left her in Soweto.
She reported a case to the police and IPID took it over for investigation. During the investigation, Ms Mavimbela managed to identify only one police officer, Sergeant Phillip Mofokeng, and he was charged with assault.
The Vosloorus Magistrates Court found Sergeant Mofokeng guilty of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and he was sentenced to five years imprisonment. The sentence was, however, wholly suspended for a period of five years on condition that Sergeant Mofokeng is not convicted of assault committed during the period of suspension.
