Two prisoners shot and killed in Thohoyandou High Court Cells

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) confirms that it received a report of a discharge of police firearm in Thohoyandou High court premises holding cells. One of the deceased managed to disarm a firearm from one official from the Correctional Services and suddenly started firing at random. An on duty SAPS officer became aware of the shooting and got involved.

During the shooting scuffle two adult male prisoners who were attacking two Correctional Service officials and the Police officer were shot and killed. The incident took place in Thohoyandou High court premises in the holding cells on Tuesday, 06 August 2019 at around 14:50. This incident was attended by our investigators and investigations are continuing.
