Two Policemen convicted for October 2015 murder and assault in Krugersdorp

38 year old Sergeant Sebetwa (accused no. 1) and 30 year old Constable Mabela (accused no. 2) were convicted of murder and assault respectively by the Palmridge High Court, where they were on trial since 31 October. Their conviction follows the shooting of 32 year old Khulekani Mpanza, who was shot and killed in Harvey Street, Krugersdorp in October 2015. The suspects made false statements alleging that at the time when the deceased was shot by them, he had been shooting at the police. CCTV footage which was found later showed that the deceased was shot while lying on the ground and was not posing any danger to the police.

All four members from Krugersdorp SAPS were charged with murder and defeating the ends of justice. Two were convicted of murder and assault respectively; the other two police officers were acquitted. The IPID is satisfied with the outcome of the case and hopes that the family of the deceased will find peace
