Three EKMP officers face charges of theft, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice
IPID today (10 March 2023) arrested three Ekurhuleni Metro Police officers for stolen goods, kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice. The three Constables are stationed at the Boksburg Specialised Unit of Truck Hijackings.
It is alleged that on 6 July 2022 just before 12pm, three EKMP officers went for a search operation at Smokes and Kings Supermarket in Rynfield, Benoni and confiscated boxes of cigarettes to the value of R25 000. They loaded the cigarettes in one of the metro police vans while the employee was taken into another metro police car.
While confiscating the cigarettes they allegedly disconnected the surveillance camera inside the shop. The officers then drove to Northmead with the supermarket employee under the pretext that he was arrested. They demanded money and cellphone for his release. He allegedly gave them the R200.00 notes that he had in his possession and was then dropped off in Northmead near the freeway.
The police officers booked two boxes of cigarettes at the Benoni Police Station and their warning statements indicated that the goods were found at an unknown property and the owner was also unknown, because he (suspect) ran away when he saw them. The officers also failed to open a case as they alleged.
They will face charges of theft, kidnapping, extortion and defeating the ends of justice.
The officers will be detained at the Boksburg Holding Cells.
