Pretoria 20-Year-Old Dies In Police Custody At The Hands Of Police

Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating a case of Death as a result of police action. Standby for upington area received a phone Rosedale police station informing about an alleged inmate that was assaulted at Rosedale police station cell passage way by Constable. The inmate succumbed to death as a result of an assault.

It is alleged the 20-year decease was arrested on allegations of being found in possession of suspected stolen properties as per Rosedale Case 225/10/2021.

It is alleged inmates heard the deceased crying and calling for help at midnight after the suspect police officer took him out of the cell in the night. It is alleged the suspect accused the deceased of breaking into his relative’s houses. It is alleged everything after the assault went suddenly quiet.

The suspect was heard calling his colleague and asked him to call an ambulance. The suspect's colleague checked the deceased for any pulse or signs of life but they were none. The deceased was declared dead on the scene.

1IPID attended the scene and Statement from the inmates were obtained, LCRC photographed the crime scene, EMS member arrived and declared the death of the deceased.

Investigations are ongoing and the following reports are still outstanding

1. Post-mortem report.

2. Warning statement of the suspect.

3. On duty SAPS members.
