Pietermaritzburg constable arrested for murder of 20 year old man

A 28-year-old Constable was arrested on 01 September 2018 for murder after handing himself over. The accused is stationed at Boston SAPS. The arrest follows the shooting of 20-year-old Siyanda Mshengu in Mafakatini, Pietermaritzburg.

It is alleged that on 01 September 2018 at about 00:15 two men were walking on the street from a tavern on their way home. They saw a vehicle, a Toyota Avanza, driven by a person known to them. One of the men called out the name of the driver, asking for a lift. On the passenger side was a police officer. He got out of the said vehicle and spoke to one of the men who had requested the lift and all of a sudden a gunshot went off. It is alleged that the policeman rushed to the driver of the vehicle and told him that they had to leave as he had killed a boy accidentally. He told the driver to take him to the police station but then absconded. Later, he handed himself over and was arrested.

The accused will appear at Pietermaritzburg Regional Court 03 September 2018 on a charge of murder.
