A man was shot & killed after Police retaliated during a shoot out

Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating a case of Death as a Result of Police Action. It is alleged that members from Sub District (Johannesburg North and Johannesburg West) were on the way to conduct a Road Block on the corner of Roosevelt & Springbok Street in Alexandra.

While approaching they heard gunshots and they alighted from the vehicle and approached on foot. They then saw two African males shooting in the air and a Constable police officer ordered them to drop their firearms. It is alleged that One of them withdrew and hid the firearm on his front waist.

The other one fired a shot towards Police officers and the members retaliated. The community started attacking the members, while trying to take the suspect's firearm. Captain police officer who was with the Constable officer managed to pick up the suspect's firearm and the community tried to attack him and he fired two warning shots.

The members managed to get into their vehicle and drove to the Station. Witnesses were interviewed, the deceased family was at the scene and family liaison was conducted. Constable police officer fired 5 shots using Z88 and the Captain then fired two shots using Z88. The deceased is 27 years old. He was shot on the chest. PR test was conducted on both members and the deceased.
