IPID to take over investigation in which two children were run over by a Policeman in Sandfontein, North West

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) today became aware of reports on social media in which it is alleged that two children were run over by a police officer in Sandfontein in the North West on 4 April 2018. The IPID's investigator in the North West made inquires and established that this matter was not reported as required by the IPID Act.

In terms of Section 28 of the IPID Act, this matter is classified as a death as a result of police action and should be reported it the IPID by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) immediately upon becoming aware and within 24 hours in writing.

Since no report was received by the IPID as required by the law, a case of failure to report will be opened to determine who should be held accountable for such failure to report. It is an offence not to report matters that fall within the mandate of the IPID.

Instructions have been given to investigators to take over the investigation so that the incident can be investigated independently by the IPID.
