IPID secured a conviction of rape and pointing of firearm

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has secured a conviction against a member of SAPS stationed at Laingsburg police station in the Western Cape Province.

On the 25th of November 2016, the 34 -year-old victim was arrested on a charge of Theft. She was detained at the Laingsburg police station. Whilst in detention, the 31 year old Constable Lizalise Sentane entered her cell, grabbed the Victim, started kissing and undressing her. When the victim resisted him he then took out a firearm, pointed it at her and proceeded raping her in the police cell.

The Victim opened the case of Rape at a later stage and IPID continued with the Investigations that led to the Accused being arrested and being released on bail. Recommendations were made by IPID for the member to be disciplined but the Employer acquitted him.

On the 29th of July 2023 the Accused was convicted in the Worcester Regional court on charges of Rape and Pointing of Firearm. The case has since been remanded to the 1st of November 2023 for sentencing.

Unfortunately the member is still serving as a police officer after the Employer acquitted him at the disciplinary hearing.
