IPID is investigating the shooting of an unknown male by police in Bishop Lavis, Western Cape

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating the shooting of an unknown man in the streets Bishop Lavis. The shooting occurred on in the early hours of 12 December 2012.

It is alleged that on 12 December 2012 at about 00:35 members of Vispol were patrolling Bonteheuwel, Bishop Lavis and spotted a coloured male person walking in the street. He was confronted by two constables who wanted to search him. The man allegedly drew a firearm with which he shot at the policemen. A constable was shot on the neck and he shot back. The unknown male was then shot on the right shoulder and on the nose. The deceased was declared dead at the crime scene by the paramedics. A 9mm Beretta with its serial number filed-off and 15 live rounds.

The IPID was informed and took over the investigation and attended the crime scene. The post mortem will be conducted on 13 December 2012 at Tygerberg FPS.

Family of the deceased is currently unknown.

No arrests have been made. The investigation continues.
