IPID Investigating a shooting incident – Milnerton, Western Cape

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a shooting incident which took place in Melkbosrand, Western Cape on 29 August 2012. The deceased is a 23 year old Angolan national.

It is alleged that on Wednesday 29 August 2012 at about 01:30, the deceased and two other men committed a house robbery at Melkbosstrand where they tied up the occupants of the house, took household items and stole a Toyota Yaris. A Melkbosstrand patrol van noticed this Toyota Yaris speeding out of Melkbosstrand and gave chase. The Toyota Yaris was pulled off on the N7 near Du Noon Township in Milnerton. It is alleged that one of the three occupants of the vehicle attempted to escape after which the SAPS members shot him. He was declared dead on the scene. Three police members from Melkbosrand SAPS, the Flying Squad and Dog Unit were involved in the shooting.

The other two suspects did not attempt to escape and they were arrested inside the vehicle (Toyota Yaris). Stolen property was recovered inside the stolen vehicle including a firearm that was stolen during the house robbery. This firearm was not used during this incident.

The post mortem is scheduled for 30 August 2012.

IPID investigators attended the crime scene on 29 August 2012 at 04:30 and a murder case docket was opened.

No arrest of SAPS members have been made at this stage.
