IPID investigating Kraaifontein shooting of policeman by his colleague

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a shooting which occurred in Kraaifontein, Cape Town on the evening of 19 April 2017.

It is alleged that on Wednesday 19 April 2017 at about 20:30 four (4) members of the Stabilization Unit who were working in the Kraaifontein area were sitting in a police vehicle when a Constable (a passenger in the vehicle) allegedly accidentally fired a shot from his pistol, which fatally wounded another Constable, who was the driver of the said vehicle and seated in the driver’s seat at the time of the incident.

The Constable who was shot was declared dead on the scene by Emergency Services personnel. It was observed that he had one (1) gunshot wound on the left side of his back (entry) and one (1) gunshot wound on the left side of his chest (exit).

The firearms of all police officers who were in the vehicle were confiscated and sent for ballistics testing.

An inquest docket was opened and is being investigated. No arrest has been made.

The investigation continues.
