IPID Investigates Death as a Result of Police Action: Befordview, Gauteng
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) is investigating a case of death as a result of police action. The incident allegedly took place on 3 January 2022 around 11:45 on R24 near Gilloolys interchange Bedfordview. IPID attended the crime scene upon being notified at 13:30.
It is alleged that the police officer witnessed a shooting incident while driving in the area and some suspects driving away in a white BMW 1 series. This is when he took out his pistol and fired 3 rounds towards the BMW and managed to hit one suspect, while the others escaped. The police officer then made a look out for the run-away vehicle while he attended to the shot suspect and called an ambulance for him. Upon the arrival of the ambulance the shot suspect was certified dead by the paramedics, they then took his body to the Germiston mortuary where a post mortem will be conducted and it was later discovered the he is a Nigerian national
Two other police officers from Kempton park Vispol heard the lookout over the police radio for the BMW 1 series while patrolling and spotted the run—away vehicle. A chase ensued between the police and suspects on the R24 near Gillooys interchange and all Nigerian three suspects inside the BMW 1 series were arrested. A case of inquest was opened in Bedfordview.
