IPID investigates death as a result of Police action
IPID is investigating a case of death as a result of Police action. It is alleged that on the 26th of March 2022 at about 16:50, a suspect was fatally wounded during a shootout between the police and five suspects who had robbed a store at the Wonderpark shopping mall in Pretoria North. The shootout happened at Corner First Avenue & Boundary Road Heartherdale, Akasia.
The police received a tip-off about a planned robbery at the Fabian store at the Wonderpark Shopping Mall. They stationed one the members at the mall to monitor the store. At about 16:45, five African males entered the Fabian store. Two of the suspects went to the cashiers and three took the clothes from the shelves and put them in big plastic bags and left the store afterwards. The police officer followed the suspects when they left the store to their getaway car which is a silver Nissan Livino with registration number BJ 59 GL GP.
The police officer called for backup and when the suspects realised that they were being followed, they started shooting at the police who retaliated. During the shootout one suspect was shot dead, one was shot on both legs and other three were arrested and detained at the Akasia police station.
The deceased was taken to the Ga-Rankuwa mortuary and the injured suspect is in hospital under police guard.
A case of Business Robbery, Possession of Unlicensed firearm, attempted murder and Fraud has been opened.
