IPID investigates a case of murder and attempted murder
welcomes the decision to deny bail to the police officer who shot and killed one person with his service pistol and injured the other in Kraaifontein, in the Western Cape. The suspect was denied bail on 15 July 2022 at Bluedowns Magistrate’s Court. His case has been remanded to 8 September 2022 for further investigation.
It is alleged that the suspect was visiting family at Kraaifontein and without any provocation he (the officer) started to shoot randomly at the victims and thereafter fled the scene.
The deceased was allegedly shot three times at the back, the second victim was shot five times and was taken to hospital while the third victim was not injured and fled the scene.
The motive of the shooting remains unknown.
The suspect was arrested on the 24 May 2022 after he handed himself over at the Philippi Police Station. He has been in custody since his arrest and on 15 July 2022 he made a formal bail application in court which IPID and the NPA opposed.
