IPID has arrested a Police Captain on charges of murder and defeating the ends of justice in Pinetown , Kwazulu-Natal
On 23 January 2013, the IPID arrested a police Captain for murder and defeating the ends of justice. The arrest is in connection with a shooting incident in Pinetown following a robbery at KFC on 5 October 2012.
In that incident, a policeman was killed by robbers and another injured. A suspected robber was shot and killed by the Captain who has now been arrested. At the time, it was alleged that the suspect robber was shooting at the police Captain and that there was an exchange of fire.
An investigation was conducted and it found that the deceased was shot execution style while not posing a threat to the policeman. The policeman had then covered up what happened. The IPID is looking into the possibility that other police officers were complicit in the cover up.
A J50 warrant of arrest was obtained after the case was discussed with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who authorized it, and it was carried out when the suspect policeman went on duty.
The 42 year old suspect policeman (from Pinetown SAPS) appeared on 23 January 2013 at the Pinetown Regional Court. The IPID did not oppose bail. He was released on warning. The case has been postponed to 6 March 2013 for further investigation.
The IPID wishes to reiterate that is has no vendetta against any member of the SAPS and that our Criminal Justice System will not tolerate vigilante actions, especially from police officers, who should know better.
