IPID arrests a DPCI Official on allegations of rape charges

IPID effected an arrest of a Constable attached to Commercial Crime, Mthatha office of Directorate for Priority of Crime Investigative (DPCI) commonly referred as Hawks on 10 December 2020 after the said 35 year old Police Constable Michael Zonke has been on the run for the past two to three days after committing the crime and also being aware that he was sought for rape allegations against him. It is alleged that on the 07 December 2020 at nighttime Constable Michael Zonke, uninvited visited his 33 year old former girlfriend at Sibangweni village in Libode, Eastern Cape. The Constable raped the victim. The rape incident was reported to the police who then activated IPID who did a sterling job by finally tracing and arresting him. The accused appeared before Mthatha Magistrate court today, Friday, 11 December 2020.

The matter was remanded to the 17 December 2020 for formal bail application. IPID will oppose bail. IPID Executive Director Ms Dikeledi Ntlatseng commend the efforts made by Eastern Cape IPID investigators who worked tirelessly and ensured that Constable Zonke is arrested to have his day in a court of law to account for the GBV crime he committed.
