IPID Arrested a police officer on 5 accounts of assault
The independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) in Kwa Zulu Natal arrested a member of the South African Police Services for Assault yesterday on Monday 11th of September 2023.
The arrest follows the surfacing of a video footage on social media of police Officers brutally assaulting and kicking about Seven men who were lying down on their stomachs on the side of the road. The incident is alleged to have happened on the 22 August 2023 on the N11 in Newcastle Kwa Zulu Natal.
The Two victims are alleged to have lost some teeth and others sustained some bruises. IPID got together a team to investigate the allegations. The investigation culminated in Sergeant Sibusiso Xolani Kunene (46) being arrested yesterday Monday the 11th of September 2023. He appeared in court this afternoon facing 5 counts of Assault. He was released on R1000 bail, and a case is postponed to the 22 September 2023 for further investigations. Sergeant Kunene is said to be stationed at the Newcastle Detectives but currently attached to the Amajuba District task team.
The is a possibility of more arrests being effected with more charges added as investigations continue.
