An off duty officer allegedly shot and killed a 23-year-old male person in Kimberly

Independent Police Investigative Directorate is investigating a case of death as a result of police action. It is alleged that on the 9th of August 2021 the deceased 23-year-old male was breaking the windows at his parent’s house and swearing when the suspect off duty police officer heard the noise outside. It is alleged that he went out of his house and approached the deceased in order to try to calm him down.

It is alleged that the deceased took out a knife and stabbed the suspect (Police officer) twice with it and he (the officer) sustained a stab wound on the wrist and chest, he then tried to run away but the deceased chased him.

It is alleged that the off duty officer stopped and drew his service pistol and fired two warning shots. The deceased continued to advance towards him with a knife. The suspect fired a third shot towards the deceased and he was struck by the bullet on the chest and got fatally wounded and he died on the crime scene. IPID collected evidence and investigations are continuing.
