Constables sentenced to 18 years for Macassar rape, Western Cape
A 33 year old Constable based at Macassar SAPS was sentenced to 18 years imprisonment for 3 counts of rape. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm. The accused was out on bail at the time of sentencing and was immediately sent to Pollsmoor prison. The investigation was conducted by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID). The Magistrate commended the IPID investigator for the manner in which he investigated the case and for his reliability as a witness.
The complainant, who was 23 years old at the time, alleged that on 21 June 2013 she was allegedly raped by the suspect in police holding cells at Macassar SAPS, where the suspect was on duty. It is alleged that the victim was arrested and detained on a warrant of arrest at Macassar SAPS for housebreaking and theft. The victim had asked for toilet paper and after the suspect gave it to her, he went back to her cell and allegedly raped her.
The IPID was notified by SAPS on on the same day, after the complainant had reported the rape allegations. The IPID took over the investigation and obtained all the relevant evidence.
