Constable given suspended sentence for statutory rape in Windsorton, Northern Cape
Constable Teboho Mampuru from Windsorton was convicted and sentenced for statutory rape of a 14 year old minor in Windsorton, Northern Cape. The incident took place at Windsorton police barracks while the policeman was off-duty.
The complainant alleges that on 13 February 2013 at around 23:00 she and her friend got into a police vehicle driven by the constable. He drove with them to Barkly West to draw some money and later drove back to the police barracks where he later slept with her. The matter was reported to Windsorton SAPS and the case was taken over and investigated by the IPID. The docket was referred to the Director of Public prosecutions (DPP) who decided to charge the constable for statutory rape and sexual assault.
Constable Mpuru appeared at Barkly West Regional Court on 21 October 2014 where he pleaded guilty on a charge of statutory rape and not guilty on sexual assault. He was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment, which was wholly suspended.
