Constable arrested for rape in Grobleshoop appears in court, Groblershoop

29 year old SAPS Constable accused of raping a 28 year old woman on 12 May 2012 appeared at the Upington Magistrates’ Court today and was granted bail of R2000.00. Condition attached to his bail is that he does not interfere with the witnesses directly or indirectly. The matter was postponed to 26 June 2012 for further investigations.

The policeman’s appearance in court follows allegations under investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) that he raped a 28 year old woman in Groblershoop, Northern Cape on 12 May 2012. The suspect is attached to Upington Public Order Policing.

It is alleged that in the early hours of Saturday, 12 May 2012, the suspect Constable was at a local tavern together with the victim and other people. When it was time to go home, it is alleged that the suspect offered a lift to the victim and other 2 people in his private vehicle.

At about 04:00am, the suspect dropped off the victim’s friends at their homes and promised to take her to her residential place. It is alleged that the suspect drove past the victim’s place of residence and drove to a remote area in the vicinity of Groblershoop Dam. He parked his vehicle under the tree where he allegedly raped the victim. After raping the victim he then drove her back to her residential place. The victim reported the incident to her friend and later to the police.

The suspect was arrested by the police and handed him over to the IPID’s investigators.
