An Alleged Illegal Miner Dies at the Hands of Police Actions: IPID is Investigating

The IPID is investigating a case of death as a result of police actions. It is alleged that on 11 August 2021 at about 13h30, the members of Krugersdorp Crime Prevention Unit were conducting operations on illegal mining at Kagiso Mines. They then noticed a group of African males who were suspected to be involved in illegal mining. When these males saw the police, they ran away to different directions.

It is alleged that police officers then tried to apprehend one of the suspects and the suspect took out an iron hammer from his pants and tried to hit one of the police officers. It is then that the suspect police officer fired one warning shot but the suspect kept on coming towards him and he fired another shot at the suspect.

The suspect was declared dead at the crime scene and sustained two gunshot wounds in the abdomen. The other police officers managed to arrest 13 suspects at the crime scene. Post-mortem will be conducted next week and investigations are ongoing.
