5 Civilians and a Police Officer arrested for Vigilante Murder in Daveyton
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested a 5 civilians and one Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) police officer. The arrest was made in the early hours of 13 March 2018 and it is in connection with the murder of 20 year old Themba Grant Moganedi in Daveyton.
It is alleged that on 28 February 2018, there was a house breaking at the home of one of the 5 civilians, who is employed by the Ekurhuleni Emergency Management Services (EMS), where a Plasma TV was stolen.
On 01 March 2018, members of the community convened, traced and apprehended 4 suspects. Among the suspects apprehended was the deceased, Themba Grant Moganedi. The house breaking/theft suspects were interrogated and assaulted by the members of the community who were demanding that they return the stolen Plasma TV. Other house breaking suspects were assaulted and one had boiling water poured on him.
The victims further allege that an EMPD police Constable, attached to the EMPD VIP Protection was part of the assault and that he had discharged his firearm in the direction of the deceased. The deceased was admitted at the Far East Hospital and he died on 02 March 2018.
All 6 suspects, who are aged between 21 and 44 years old, were arrested by IPID investigators. They will appear at the Benoni Regional Court on a charge of murder, kidnapping and assault GBH.
